Le Warrior Spirit

“It’s not whether you got knocked down; it’s whether you get back up.”

– Vince Lombardi

I’ve gotten knocked down a few times in football and that crap hurt, soul, mind, and body. To this day, I’m not sure why I didn’t just up and quit.

footballIt was my Sophomore year of high school, nearing towards the end of the semester. I saw these big, tough-looking football players and thought to myself, wow, I want to be that.

How do I get from this guy (*points to self) to that guy?

I think what got me to commit was when a close friend of mine said, “I think you’d be a good football player, you have the broad shoulders”.

That was all I needed, I was in.

Here comes Jonny, the football star folks.

*Cue “Back in Black” song by ACDC*

Little did I realize, I was little. I was tiny. I was basically the shoulder pads and helmet on the field without a body. It was like watching a little ant running around the grass with3923_ACDC-min large Beatles stepping all over the ant.

It was a pity to witness and I’m glad you, the reader, probably never saw.

I wasn’t the best football player, obviously. I played with a kid who went to a division one school and it was my first year. But hey, I tried and tired and once again coming to this question of:

WHY DID I NOT QUIT?!

I think it was a desire to simply see it through. Seeing it through to the end was something that I had developed throughout the years while playing sports in general. Heck, even video games can be added to that category. I think that’s the hack to the “WARRIOR SPIRIT”.

Warrior_SpiritHow do you not give up? Well, seeing something through allows you to just keep at it, with whatever you’re doing. That desire to make sure you get to the end of it will push you forward and keep you trying no matter the odds.

For instance, in college, I pursued a major in computer science. I didn’t get to the fun stuff until much later in the major. It was as if the beginning stages of the major were intentionally difficult for you as to weave out all the sore losers who couldn’t take the heat of Calculus 1 & 2, Physics 1 & 2, and other useless math classes.

Warrior Spirit!

Now, I’m doing what I kinda enjoy, front-end website design for a retail company. Whoo…

Warrior Spirit!

So keep on keeping on folks.

See it all to the end and don’t give up!

You got this!
