The Sin of Partiality
2 My brothers,[a] show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called?
Have you ever felt disgusted by people who would suck up to other people based on their status?
When I was in middle school, I played favoritism towards the “cool” kids. I believed I could somehow get into their group and change my own status. I did this by the jokes I made with them, how much I spoke to them, and calculative in who I’m seen with.
I believe we all do this to some extent regardless of age. We don’t initially try to include others in our sphere of acceptance without nothing. What difference does it make as we get older?
I believe these days, I say hello and get excited to see certain people who make me feel good. My issues stem entirely from someone who can make good conversation and could listen well.
I essentially don’t give people who make me feel unheard a chance to try with me. Sometimes, I even show more partiality towards Christian because I know they believe in God.
All in all, what Jesus came to do in this world is to love the broken, the lost. If I call myself a Christian, then the most important aspect of who I am is being a sinner who is saved by Christ.
If the way I live was still like the world, how would I show this love that Jesus gave to me?
What is Christianity?
Jesus came to the world and embraced the poor and humble. Our pride is what covers our hearts towards the love of Jesus and His heart towards those who truly need Him.
Jesus represents God’s love for all people, no matter the circumstance. To play partiality is to play into the world’s ideal of status that ultimately gets us nowhere. The world is temporary. To “get ahead” in this life is to find only but a temporary glory.
Jesus is the Lord of glory where He gives us glory when we honor others.
Think about how rich a life is when we humble ourselves for Jesus for the sake of love for others.
